The trapezius "Traps" is a group of muscles at the back of the neck and upper back. The trapezius are diamond-shaped and extend from the cervical vertebrae to the spine and shoulder blades. They are responsible for many movements and functions, such as elevation, retraction, rotation and stabilization of the shoulder blades. The upper trapezius is involved in shoulder elevation, while the middle and lower trapezius play a role in shoulder blade retraction and rotation. The trapezius is involved in exercises such as shoulder raises, pull-ups and shrugs. Proper development and strengthening of the trapezius contribute to good posture, improved shoulder stability and an athletic appearance of the upper back.
