The lumbar spine is a group of muscles located in the lower back, known as the lumbar region. The lumbar muscles include the spinal erector muscles, such as the spinalis, longissimus and iliocostalis muscles. Their main role is to enable extension and rotation of the spine, and to provide support and stability to the lumbar region. They are called upon during movements such as bending backwards, lifting heavy objects and maintaining an upright posture. The lumbar region is often strengthened in training programs to prevent low-back pain and improve core stability.
