The triceps are a group of muscles located at the back of the arm. They are made up of the long portion, lateral and medial muscles. The triceps are responsible for elbow extension, i.e. straightening the arm after it has been bent. They also play a role in stabilizing the shoulder during movements such as pushing. The triceps are used in exercises such as triceps extensions, push-ups and bench presses. Proper development and strengthening of the triceps can contribute to a toned, powerful appearance of the arms, as well as to performance in pushing movements and body-building exercises.
