The gluteals, also known as the gluteal muscles, are a group of muscles located in the buttock region. The main gluteal muscles include the gluteus maximus, the gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus. These muscles play an important role in stabilizing the pelvis, and in hip rotation and extension. They are called upon during movements such as walking, running and stair climbing, as well as during targeted exercises such as squats and lunges. Strong, well-developed glutes can contribute to good posture, core stability and sports performance.
