The calves, also known as the calf muscles, consist mainly of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. These muscles are located at the back of the leg, below the knee, and attach to the heel via the Achilles tendon. The calves are responsible for plantar flexion of the foot, enabling the toes to point downwards. They are involved in walking, running, jumping and many other movements involving the lower limbs. Proper development and strengthening of the calves contributes to ankle stability, propulsion when walking or running, and muscular aesthetics of the legs.
